CBICC Hosts Annual State of the County Luncheon with Centre County Commissioners

Commissioners Higgins, Concepcion, and Dershem discuss topics including development, Human Services, and capital projects

Commissioner Mark Higgins, Commissioner Amber Concepcion, CBICC President and CEO Greg Scott, and Commissioner Steven Dershem at the 2024 State of the County

STATE COLLEGE, PA – September 18, 2024 – The Chamber of Business & Industry of Centre County (CBICC) held its annual State of the County Luncheon yesterday, part of the Chamber’s Voice of Business event series. Facilitated by CBICC President and CEO Greg Scott, the speaking program featured Centre County Commissioners Mark Higgins, Amber Concepcion, and Steven Dershem, who provided insightful updates on the county’s latest developments and engaged in a robust Q&A with event attendees.

Commissioner Higgins addressed the audience with a detailed overview of Centre County’s current demographics and highlighted significant investments in housing and transportation infrastructure. He also discussed new construction and development projects shaping the county’s future.

“Current construction and development rates in the county are blowing previous records out of the water in critical areas such as hospitality, healthcare, and transportation,” said Higgins, Chair of the Board of Commissioners. “New facilities at local hospitals are set to draw top talent to the region, construction is underway on phase two of the I-80/I-99 interchange project, and in the next few years the hospitality industry plans to add new hotels to accommodate increasing tourism.”

Commissioner Concepcion further explored the burgeoning tourism sector in Centre County, highlighting an impressive recovery. She also focused on the Human Services Department’s ongoing initiatives and presented updated statistics on quality of life for residents.

“Centre County boasts a vibrant and thriving community, with one of the highest life expectancies in the state,” said Concepcion, Vice Chair of the Board of Commissioners. “These indicators are a testament to the invaluable work of our human services organizations and nonprofits, which form a safety net that enhances the well-being of all residents, uplifting our entire community.”

Commissioner Dershem provided updates on key projects and programs, including the HOPE Initiative and Therapeutic Programs, the Humane Police Officer Program, and the Centre Crest Renovation Project.

“The Centre Crest Renovation Project is the perfect example of our community’s innovation and vision,” said Dershem, Commissioner. “Transforming a 240-bed assisted living facility into a state-of-the-art 100,000 square-foot office space is a complex undertaking, and we are excited to see the positive impact it will bring to our community once completed next year.”

The annual State of the County Luncheon serves as an important platform for Chamber members and those in the business community to engage with county officials and gain a comprehensive understanding of ongoing and future initiatives that impact Centre County.
